Understand and Ignite the Power You Have Within You

Tony Robbins says always to unleash your personal power. What he means is to stop self-limiting beliefs from blocking you from all that you are, who you are, and all that you are meant to become. And when I say unlock and ignite the power within you, I’m talking about your deep core—your anatomical girdle.

When you ignite your anatomical girdle, you tap into a powerful core of stability that helps you maintain great posture, eliminate pain, support your spine, arms, and legs, and perform as a more powerful and precise athlete. Most importantly, you feel better from the inside out.

So let me teach you how to ignite your deep core.

The Connection Between Your Deep Core and Personal Power

Your deep core muscles include the transverse abdominis, multifidus, diaphragm, and pelvic floor. These muscles act as the foundation for all movement, providing the stability your body needs to function optimally. But when you experience low back pain, this core activation becomes delayed. This means your inner power—both physically and mentally—becomes delayed.

When your deep core muscles don’t engage properly, your body compensates, leading to poor posture, inefficient movement, muscle imbalances, and even chronic pain. Over time, this can affect your confidence, energy levels, and overall sense of strength.

The good news? You can reawaken and ignite your deep core through intentional activation and movement.

How to Activate Your Deep Core and Reclaim Your Power

Activating your deep core is not about doing endless crunches or planks. It requires precise, mindful engagement of the deeper stabilizing muscles that often go unnoticed. Follow these steps to ignite your power from within:

1. Learn to Find and Feel Your Deep Core

Before you can strengthen your deep core, you need to be able to connect with it. Try this simple activation drill:

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.

  • Place your hands on your lower abdomen, just inside your hip bones.

  • Take a deep breath in, allowing your belly to expand.

  • As you exhale, gently draw your lower belly in as if pulling your navel toward your spine.

  • You should feel a slight tightening deep under your fingers—this is your transverse abdominis engaging.

Repeat this slow activation for 10 breaths to establish awareness of your deep core.

2. Synchronize Your Breath with Your Core Activation

Your diaphragm and pelvic floor are essential parts of your deep core system. Learning to breathe correctly helps ensure that your core fires efficiently.

  • Inhale deeply, allowing your ribcage to expand in all directions.

  • Exhale fully, engaging your deep core by gently drawing your belly inward.

  • Avoid flattening your back to the surface—instead, think about keeping your lower spine still, in a neutral relaxed position.

3. Strengthen the Deep Core with Functional Movements

Once you can activate your core, it's time to integrate that stability into movement. Here are three key functional exercises that we do every day:

  1. Standing up from a chair, engage your deep core by pulling your belly button in. Lean forward and come up to standing. Pull your belly button in once more, then return to the sitting position. Perform 10 controlled reps.

  2. Getting up from bed Start lying down as if in bed. Engage your deep core as you roll out of bed and come to sitting. Re-engage and lie back down. Repeat 5 reps to begin to form the habit.

  3. Reaching your arm outward, stand with feet hip-width apart. Engage your deep core as you reach to open the refrigerator. Keep your spine straight and avoid rounding your back. Perform 12-15 reps.

The Mind-Body Connection: Unlocking Your Full Potential

When your deep core is strong and activated, your body moves with ease and efficiency. Your spine is supported, your posture improves, and your risk of pain decreases. But beyond the physical benefits, igniting your deep core empowers you mentally.

Just as your limiting beliefs can block your personal power, a weak or inactive deep core can block your physical power. By training your deep core, you not only build strength—you build resilience, confidence, and control over your body and mind.
